Richard Simms served NewsChannel 9 for more than 30 years as News Photographer, Chief Photographer, News Producer, Executive Producer and most recently, as the Internet Content Producer. He retired in 2014, but is proud to continue contributing as the Editor of the NewsChannel9.com Outdoors section.
Richard has a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management from Tennessee Tech University, with a Minor degree in Journalism. Prior to beginning his career with NewsChannel 9, he was a Game Warden, a Wildlife Photographer and an Information Officer for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
Richard grew up in Chattanooga and lived in Marion County and Nashville while working with TWRA. But he returned to his roots, and NewsChannel 9, in 1984.
"No matter where I've lived, Chattanooga has always been home," he says. "My wife and I are both from the Scenic City, and we were anxious to raise our daughters here."
Richard belongs to the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association. In addition to his work as a freelance outdoor journalist, he is also the owner/guide of Scenic City Fishing Charters, Inc. He is also an author, as well as a certified U.S. Coast Guard Captain, but Richard still considers himself a "Tennessee River Rat."
His mission these days is to share the message of conservation for the protection and wise use of our natural and wildlife resources.
