Rock Spring seven-year-old signs with Mocs cross country team
The Mocs Cross Country team held a special draft day signing Tuesday afternoon. Levi Smith is seven years old. He made sure to clarify that during a press conference when someone identified him as eight years old.
The young boy from Rock Spring, Ga. is now officially a member of the UTC cross country/track & field team.
Levi was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2013. It's a form of muscular weakness found typically in boys.
For Tuesday's event, UTC partnered with a non-profit called Team IMPACT. The organization helps improve quality of life for children facing serious or chronic illnesses.
His mother talked about how important it is for her son to feel like he's part of a team.
"A lot of people don't realize some kids won't have an opportunity to do this in their life," said Katie Smith, Levi's mom.
"For him to be able to tell everybody, 'I go to UTC and I'm part of the cross country team,' that's just a dream come true. A few years ago when he was diagnosed, we thought it was something taken from us."
Now, Levi will attend Mocs practices, games, team dinners, and other special events.
