A baker's dozen of offbeat Minor League Baseball team names of 2019

With the 2019 MiLB season winding down we thought it would be fun to share some crazy Minor League Baseball team names to help move summer along. It wouldn't be minor league ball without wacky team names.

Albuquerque Isotopes

  • Founded in 2003
  • Major league affiliations: Colorado Rockies
  • Mascot: Orbit
  • Origin Story: The Simpsons' fictional Springfield Isotopes from the episode from season two called "Dancin' Homer" that aired November 8, 1990.
  • Ballpark: Isotopes Park

Amarillo Sod Poodles

  • Founded in 2019
  • Major league affiliations: San Diego Padres
  • Mascot: RUCKUS the Sod Poodle
  • Origin Story: Fans picked the name. The other four names were the Boot Scooters Bronc Busters Jerky & Long Haulers.
  • Ballpark: Hodgetown

Binghamton Rumble Ponies

  • Founded in 1987, Rumble Ponies since 2017
  • Major league affiliations: New York Mets
  • Mascot: Rowdy the Pony
  • Origin Story: The team held a name us contest on their website in 2016.
  • Ballpark: NYSEG Stadium

Side note: Not only are the Binghamton Rumble Ponies but this year they played in a game as the Binghamton Spiedies. What is a Spiedies? A spiedie is a meat sandwich local to Binghamton.

Columbia Fireflies

  • Founded in 2016
  • Major league affiliations: New York Mets
  • Mascot: Mason
  • Origin Story: Public contest to name the team
  • Ballpark: Segra Park

Parts of the team's uniforms glow in the dark because they are the Fireflies. Is Columbia Fireflies better name then the Savannah Sand Gnats?

Down East Wood Ducks

  • Founded in 2017
  • Major league affiliations: Texas Rangers
  • Mascot: DEWD
  • Origin Story: The team had a contest with the names Down East Eagles, Down East HamHawks, Down East Hogzillas, Down East Shaggers, and Down East Wood Ducks.
  • Ballpark: Grainger Stadium

This year the Down East Wood Ducks played as the Kinston Collard Greens.

El Paso Chihuahuas

  • Founded in 2014
  • Major league affiliations: San Diego Padres
  • Mascot: Chico
  • Origin Story: The name references the Chihuahuan Desert.
  • Ballpark: Southwest University Park

El Paso Chihuahuas played as El Paso Margaritas this year.

Florida Fire Frogs

  • Founded in 2017
  • Major league affiliations: Atlanta Braves
  • Mascot: Striker the Fire Frog
  • Origin Story: The team had a contest with these as the alternative names: Florida Dragonflies, Florida Mud Kickers, Florida Rodeo Clowns, Florida Sorcerers and Florida Toucans.
  • Ballpark: Osceola County Stadium

Greensboro Grasshoppers

  • Founded in 1979, Grasshoppers since '05
  • Major league affiliations: Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Mascot: Guilford Grasshopper
  • Origin Story: Owners changed it from Greensboro Bats to the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
  • Ballpark: First National Bank Field

The Greensboro Grasshoppers became Ocelotes de Greensboro just like when the Lookouts became Montañas de Chattanooga for Copa de la Diversión.

Hartford Yard Goats

  • Founded in 2016
  • Major league affiliations: Colorado Rockies
  • Mascot:Chompers and Chew Chew
  • Origin Story: Yard Goats was selected in a contest.
  • Ballpark: Dunkin' Donuts Park

Sometimes the Hartford Yard Goats play as the Hartford Steamed Cheeseburgers.

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

  • Founded in 1962, Jumbo Shrimp since '17
  • Major league affiliations: Florida/Miami Marlins
  • Mascot: Scampi
  • Origin Story: Jacksonville Suns were renamed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in November of 2016.
  • Ballpark: Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville

But of course the Jumbo Shrimp would turn into the Frozen Shrimp to support a hockey team.

For Braves fans side note: Tom Glavine played hockey. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1984. He was drafted ahead of Brett Hull, Gary Suter and Luc Robitaille.

Lansing Lugnuts

  • Founded in 1955, Lugnuts since '96
  • Major league affiliations: Toronto Blue Jays
  • Mascot: Big Lug
  • Origin Story: Fan suggestion
  • Ballpark: Cooley Law School Stadium

The Lugnuts also played as the Lansing Locos for Copa de la Diversión.

Get it? Nuts, Locos.

New Orleans Baby Cakes

  • Founded in 1993, Baby Cakes in 2017
  • Major league affiliations: Miami Marlins
  • Mascot:Boudreaux D. Nutria and Clotile
  • Origin Story: Baby Cakes won in a name the team contest with the names the Red Eyes, Crawfish, Night Owls, King Cakes, Po'boys and Tailgators.
  • Ballpark: Shrine on Airline

Richmond Flying Squirrels

  • Founded in 1972, Flying Squirrels in '10
  • Major league affiliations: San Francisco Giants
  • Mascot: Nutzy
  • Origin Story: In a name the team contest the Flying Squrrels were picked over names like Rock Hoppers, Hambones, Rhinos, Flatheads, and Hush Puppies.
  • Ballpark: The Diamond

Side note: not only are the Flying Squirrels a fun name but this year they played as the Richmond Hushpuppies on the diamond.

And their Copa de la Diversión was the Ardillas Voladoras.

Not in the MiLB this year but will be next year is the Rocket City Trash Pandas. They are an Atlanta Braves' Double-A Affiliate.

And if this article wasn't coming from Chattanooga then we would have had the Chattanooga Lookouts on here but we all know the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Charleston RiverDogs did not make the list but maybe it should have because of Bill Murray alone.

And there is good history between the Lookouts and the RiverDogs.
