PORTLAND, Ore. — Prosecutors are dropping serious charges, for now, against the more than 100 people arrested in Portland in demonstrations that have rocked the city since Donald J. Trump was elected president.
Nearly everyone arrested will be cited for failing to obey a police officer, which the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office says could carry up to a $1,000 fine.
Officers and detectives are still working through arrest reports, and the DA’s Office said their team is reviewing hundreds of hours of video evidence.
A police spokesperson said they won’t be done with the work in time for Monday’s arraignments, so the arrested protesters will be issued “no complaints” on the other, more serious charges - like attempted assault on a peace officer and disorderly conduct.
“None of the cases have actually been evaluated for legal sufficiency and prosecutorial merit,” Portland Police said in a press release. “Once the reports have been submitted to the DA’s Office and the video evidence has been reviewed, decisions regarding prosecution will be made.”
A bureau spokesperson said it isn’t a surprise that people have been “no complainted” during the arraignments, because of the extensive work left to complete on dozens of cases.
The only exceptions are for the two people arrested in Saturday morning’s shooting on the Morrison Bridge.
The Portland chapter of the National Lawyer's Guild is hosting a meeting Monday night for those arrested during the protest. Attorneys and legal workers will be on-hand to field questions and offer advice. The meeting is at the Clinton Street Theater in Southeast Portland; doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 8 p.m.
It did come as an unexpected surprise to some of those charged and their supporters who packed a courtroom in downtown Portland. They reacted with smiles and subdued calls of "yes!"
The protests, which have occurred on a daily basis since last Tuesday, have left more than $1 million in damages to local businesses and property. Thursday night's protests devolved into a particularly violent and destructive riot, ending in the arrest of 25 people. Friday, 17 were arrested.
Tensions escalated Saturday night, when police arrested more than 70 people -- transporting them to central booking via TriMet bus.
Some facing disorderly conduct charges will appear in court Monday afternoon, and others will be expected in court Tuesday morning.
