Woman overcomes addiction, rents home for her family for the first time

A woman dramatically turned her life around this past year and now wants others to know there’s hope for recovery. Charity Holland battled addiction for years. Her struggle was so bad she lived on the streets and under bridges. Now, for the first time, she's in her own place with her kids, something unimaginable a year ago.

When Charity Holland walks through doors of her new duplex, she's walking into more than just her new home.

“I'm an addict, so the past few years before this last year were pretty bad on my family, my kids, anybody that was around me,” Holland said.

For the first time in her life she's renting her own place, a far cry from where she lived a little more than a year ago.

“At the very end, I was living under bridges. My kids hadn't heard from me in months, nobody knew if I was alive or dead,” Holland said.

It took a trip to the hospital last December to make her realize she needed to change.

“I couldn't bear to see the looks on my children's face when they came in and saw me in the hospital after not seeing me for months. I mean the looks on their faces were indescribable,” Holland said.

In the months after, she went through intense recovery, using her family as motivation to get better.

“I got a job. I worked. I saved my money. I did have a case manager that worked with me and helped me go through steps to building my life back together,” Holland said.

A year and a day clean under her belt, signing the lease on her new home is like another milestone.

“I want people to know that they can do this. It was hard, was not easy,” Holland said.

But for her kids, that hard work means the world.

“It's a blessing to have you back in my life and to actually be able to live the rest of my life with you,” Holland’s son Dalaurence Holland said.

Thankful to hold each other tight this Christmas, for the first time in a long time.

Holland still has a long way to go on her journey, but she's so thankful for all of the support she's had from the community. If you'd like to help, here’s a link to their GoFundMe.
