Woman found dead in Walker County married convicted murderer days before disappearance
NewsChannel 9 has confirmed that Britney Parker Cole, the woman whose body was found in LaFayette this week, married a convicted murderer just days before her disappearance.
Sheriff Steve Wilson tells us that Britney married Bob Jay Cole on June 10th. Her body was found on the 18th near the 2900 block of Old Mineral Springs Road. Investigators believe she had been dead for three to five days.
On Thursday, Sheriff Wilson confirmed the GBI has positively identified the body as the 31-year-old LaFayette woman.
According to Georgia Department of Corrections records, Cole was released from state prison on parole in August of 2018, having served 27 years behind bars. Court records show that Cole was convicted of robbing and murdering Benjamin West in 1990. Cole was just 16 years old at the time.
Sheriff Steve Wilson says they are aware of Cole's criminal history and investigators have spoken to him about Britney's disappearance. Wilson says he is cooperating with investigators at this time. Wilson says they are also still interviewing other people who interacted with Britney in the days before her death. No arrests have been made at this time.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is performing an autopsy at their crime lab in Decatur. Sheriff Wilson says there were no obvious signs of foul play when the body was discovered.
Sheriff Wilson says Britney was last seen last Thursday after getting off her shift at Wanda’s restaurant in Rock Spring, Georgia, around 9 to 10 p.m.
We spoke with a cousin of Britney's Thursday, who described her as a kind and loving person.
“She was a sweet and kind person. Always there to talk if you needed to. She would never hurt anyone. And didn't deserve this. The family wants answers. Closure. Answers to why this even happened. And if someone murdered her we want justice for her. She has kids. And loved them so much. She was such a loving person. I don't see why anyone would want to hurt her if that's what happened.”
On June 14th, a post on Britney's Facebook page says, "Everyday I wake up thinking what in the hell went so wrong.. Today I wake up thinking how damn confused things are in my life right now and how everything is all going to fast.. I need to just be still and let god take care if it... He knows what is best for me.."
