Where your money goes when you donate to Chattanooga Salvation Army
The sound of the silver bells is very familiar during the holiday season, but when you drop a dollar in the kettle, where does your money go?
Major Robert Lyle: "What we raise here allows us to keep our ministries going throughout the year"
Here in Chattanooga, those donations help one Salvation Army ministry help homeless people year round.
Volunteers come to help pack hundreds and hundreds of backpacks for homeless folks, filling them with essentials like toothbrushes, umbrellas, coats, and flashlights - all through donations.
Volunteers here say they are only able to help because of donations provided by the community.
"We're doing what God has called us to do," says volunteer Danny Mingo.
That's not the only reason Mingo volunteers - he says Salvation Army was there for him when he was growing up.
"There were times when if it wasn't for Salvation Army, we wouldn't have had a Christmas."
The Salvation Army also hosts music classes, character building classes and inner city ministries with your donations.
NewsChannel 9 was out at Hamilton Place Mall Friday for the "Battle for the Bells" event to help raise money for the Salvation Army.
