The United States Post Office (USPS) inspector in Knoxville says an investigation is underway after blue mailboxes at four different local post offices in the NewsChannel 9 viewing area were vandalized.

This happened at post offices in East Ridge, Rossville, Dalton and Rocky Face.

Postal Inspector Wendy Boles says blue collection boxes were broken into some time after the regular clerk took the mail from the boxes on Saturday afternoon and before Monday morning. The boxes were vandalized to the point where someone could access mail.

Boles says investigators are unclear whether any mail was taken. But she urges customers to contact their local post office if they saw anything or if they had placed mail there during that time.

Boles says the person who did this committed a federal crime, and that the USPS plans to prosecute fully if police make an arrest in this case.
