UPDATE: Highway 2 in Varnell back open after crash involving chickens
Georgia State Patrol says Highway 2 in Varnell is back open after a crash Sunday evening.
Georgia State Patrol is investigating a crash in Whitfield County that sent three people to the hospital.
Authorities say a truck carrying dozens of chickens was travelling on Highway 2 when it crashed sending the chickens in the trailer spilling across the road.
Caleb Terry with Georgia State Patrol says the driver of the truck had to be airlifted to a local hospital.
Two passengers in the other vehicle involved were taken to area hospitals.
At this time, their condition is unknown.
GSP says the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Agriculture were on the scene throughout the evening assisting in the cleanup as fuel and deceased chickens covered the road.
Authorities closed a large portion of Highway 2 for several hours as they worked to clear the scene.
Whitfield County dispatch tells NewsChannel 9 the Georgia State Patrol is working an accident involving an overturned truck carrying chickens and a passenger van.
Dispatch says the accident happened at Highway 2 and Lee Bryant Rd.
According to dispatch, it's going to take several hours to clear the scene given that the contents of the truck have spilled across the road.
Dispatch says there are injuries but we don't know their extent at this time.
