The Woodmore Elementary bus crash: A timeline of events

It was one of the darkest days in Chattanooga's history. Six children lost their lives and dozens of others were injured when a school bus from Woodmore Elementary crashed in front of a home on Talley Road.

What follows is a timeline of events since November 21st that are related to the tragedy.

November 21st, 2016

Woodmore Bus #366 crashes on Talley Road, killing 5 instantly, injuring dozens of others

Police arrest bus driver Johnthony Walker and charge him with vehicular homicide.

November 22nd, 2016

Walker's mother tells CNN the crash was "God's will." Also, donors flood the offices of Blood Assurance to give blood to help the surviving victims.

November 23rd, 2016

The community comes together for a vigil honoring the victims.

A sixth victim, later identified as Keyonte Williams, dies at the hospital.

The first lawsuit in connection with the crash is filed.

November 25th, 2016

NewsChannel 9 obtains prior complaints about Walker's driving.

November 26th, 2016

Her family holds a funeral for Cor'Dayja Jones.

November 27th, 2016

Her family holds a funeral for Zyanna Harris.

November 29th, 2016

The second of several lawsuits are filed in connection with the crash.

December 1st, 2016

Her family holds a funeral for Zoie Nash.

December 2nd, 2016

Her family holds a funeral for Zyaira Mateen.

December 3rd, 2016

His family holds a funeral for Keonte Wilson.

December 4th, 2016

His family holds a funeral for D'Myunn Brown.

December 5th, 2016

A third lawsuit is filed in the crash.

Families begin receiving money from the Woodmore Fund.

December 6th, 2016

More lawsuits filed, making for a total of five.

December 8th, 2016

Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen introduces a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would require mandatory seatbelts on all school buses.

December 9th, 2016

A sixth lawsuit is filed in the crash.

December 16th, 2016

A wrongful death lawsuit is filed claiming the bus had a defective design.

December 21st, 2016

Families file a federal lawsuit connected to the crash. Durham responds in February saying this suit should be thrown out.

January 17th, 2017

The NTSB releases its preliminary report on the crash.

January 25th, 2017

A seventh lawsuit is filed by one of the victim's families.

February 1st, 2017

Tennessee Representative David Hawk introduces a new bill that would work to make school buses in the state safer. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signals support for the bill.

February 2nd, 2017

Rep. Joanne Favors introduces a bill that would require seatbelts on buses statewide.

February 14th, 2017

Two more civil lawsuits are filed.

February 24th, 2017

Another lawsuit is filed.

March 20th, 2017

A mother of one of the students injured in the crash talked with us about her mission to get a state law passed that would require seatbelts on school buses.

March 24th, 2017

In court, Johnthony Walker pleads not guilty to the negligent homicide charges.

April 13th, 2017

Durham School Services CEO David Duke addresses the Hamilton County School board for the first time.

April 20th, 2017

The Hamilton County School Board approves a new, 2-year contract for Durham.

April 26th, 2017

Tennessee's Attorney General sues a Texas law firm, charging it "preyed on" Woodmore victims. That lawsuit later drew the attention of the state funeral board.

May 2nd, 2017

Durham Education Services adds a direct complaint line.

May 15th, 2017

Judge Don Poole grants a motion for Johnthony Walker's jury to be from out of town.

May 26th, 2017

Dionne Upton is named the new principal of Woodmore Elementary School.

June 1st, 2017

NewsChannel 9 interviews the sisters of victim Zyaira Mateen, who were on the bus at the time of the crash.

July 20th, 2017

Johnthony Walker appears in court. His attorney asks for a diversion in the case. Later, in August, Judge Poole denies the diversion request.

July 26th, 2017

More charges are filed against Walker.

August 1st, 2017

The families of the victims push for access in civil cases.

August 25th, 2017

Walker appears in court again. His attorney files a motion saying another vehicle distracted Walker right before the crash.

September 12th, 2017

Chattanooga Firefighters are honored by the Tennessee Dept of Safety & Homeland Security for their response to the crash.

September 18th, 2017

Judge Don Poole grants a defense request for Walker's bond to be lowered, and for him to be under supervised release.

September 22nd, 2017

Cor’Dayja Jones’ family sues a funeral home & law firm, saying they pressured a family member to commit to the law firm's services.

October 3rd, 2017

Judge Don Poole sets a trial date for Walker for February 27th, 2018.

October 4th, 2017

Johnthony Walker is released on bond.

October 19th, 2017

A newly-formed coalition pushes bus safety in Hamilton County.

October 25th, 2017

A NewsChannel 9 investigation reveals that Durham has not paid for counseling services for staff at Woodmore Elementary. We confirmed a week later that at least one counselor finally received her check.

February 6th, 2018

Judge hears from 3 who encountered bus driver Johnthony Walker before the deadly crash.

February 19th, 2018

Judge denies motion to include prior conduct, driving habits in Walker trial.

February 23rd, 2018

A jury of 12 men and 4 women is selected in Montgomery County for Johnthony Walker's trial.

February 27th, 2018

Johnthony Walker's trial begins.

March 1st, 2018

The jury finds Johnthony Walker guilty of six counts of criminally negligent homicide and other charges in the deaths of six Woodmore Elementary School children. Walker's sentencing hearing is set for April 24th.

April 23rd, 2018

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says it will hold a meeting to consider a Special Investigation Report into the probable cause of the Woodmore bus crash.

April 24th, 2018

Walker is sentenced to 4 years in prison after his sentencing hearing.

April 30th, 2018

The mother and father of D'Myunn Brown announced a settlement of their civil lawsuits against Durham School Services.

May 17th, 2018

269 Durham school bus drivers & monitors in Chattanooga join union. A union spokesperson says staff were concerned with "serious safety issues and the workers didn't feel like they had a voice."

May 18th, 2018

NewsChannel 9 obtains a 500-page report from the NTSB which details evidence and information used to determine probable cause.

May 22nd, 2018

The NTSB holds a meeting in Washington, D.C. discussing the crash.

June 11th, 2018

A judge denies Walker's attorney's motion to reduce the sentence based on the testimony of one mother of one of the victim's at the sentencing hearing. Walker's attorney says she will appeal.

June 14th, 2018

While out on bond as his appeals process continues, Johnthony Walker is arrested and charged with statutory rape in Nashville.

November 21st, 2018

Two years after the deadly crash, a Woodmore student who received a traumatic brain injury celebrates life and tells his story.
