Temporary lane closures begin as I-75/I-24 interchange overhaul nears
When it rains during the afternoon commute, the I-75/I-24 split is one of the first places to back up.
Temporary lane closures begin Thursday night on a huge overhaul for the heavily-traveled interchange. TDOT is working on a hauling project for the split, and they'll close the left lane on I-75 South at Mile Marker 2. The left lane of 24 East at mile marker 185 will also close from 9 pm to 6 am.
TDOT says heavy construction won't begin at the split until the fall of this year, but you can already see the signs of things to come.
In the split's median, construction equipment sits where cleared trees and moved dirt serve as signs of a huge project.
TDOT chose CW Matthews to head this project.
The Marietta construction company was in charge of completing the emergency bridge repair on I-85 in Georgia. They finished that project a month earlier than scheduled.
If you look at their website, you can see the before and after of that massive project.
TDOT says here in Chattanooga, the $134 million split overhaul won’t be done until summer of 2021, but drivers like Barbara Fairweather are looking forward to the improvement - regardless of the traffic headaches ahead.
"Most times I get off on the cloud springs exit to come that way to bypass most of that congestion area," says Barbara, "I'm very proud to see them do that's that's way overdue"
Currently, the contractor is working in several of the median areas in the interchange. This has been underway since late December 2018.
