The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating after a Marion County Sheriff's deputy was hospitalized when she was hit by accidental gunfire.

It happened Wednesday at the Marion County Sheriff's Office in Jasper.

According to Sheriff Bo Burnett, a detective was unloading his AR-15 when it accidentally fired. A female detective was walking by at the time, and the bullet hit her in the leg.

The woman was taken by ambulance to be hospitalized in Chattanooga. Sheriff Burnett says she is in surgery, but is going to be okay.

Although, Sheriff Bo Burnett says it’s possible she’ll need another surgery soon.

Sheriff Burnett says the deputy who was shot is very tough.

Our NewsChannel 9 crew was on the scene as EMS arrived at Erlanger, escorted by patrol vehicles.

TBI agents are investigating the incident.

According to Sheriff Burnett, the two detectives were so close they 'were like brother and sister,' and the man had to be sent home because he was so upset about what happened.
