St. Elmo construction may cause traffic headaches for nearby businesses

This photo from the NewsChannel 9 SkyCam shows construction on Broad Street in St. Elmo.

Store owner Darren Patrick says he had no idea the street in front of his business was shutting down for construction. He found out, when News Channel 9 asked him if it would be a problem.

"Unfortunately, I'm not surprised," said Patrick. "I regularly run into issues running in downtown. I'll find out the hard way the road has been closed because of some marathon, or some event."

Patrick owns Mountain Music on Broad Street in St. Elmo. This is an area where the city will begin its St. Elmo Drainage Improvement Project. The city says this is to a fix a collapsed line running under Broad Street, that has the potential to create dangerous flooding in the future.

Patrick says he was given no notification, and thinks the city owes him one.

"I think that’s the very least they can do," he said.

The City will close a section a broad street and offer detours. You can see those detours here.
