CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. (WTVC) - The Varnell Police Department says "30 to 40" vehicles crashed on I-75 in Catoosa County Monday morning, forcing the interstate to close.

Catoosa County Sheriff Gary Sisk says about 35 vehicles crashed near the same mile stretch of interstate, causing 15 injuries. 4 people went to Hamilton Medical, 5 to Erlanger and 6 went to Memorial GA (formerly Cornerstone). 14 additional individuals were transported by bus from the scene to a reunification location with family.

Sisk says Georgia DOT is on the scene with salt trucks and assisting, along with Georgia Emergency Management, with approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel that was spilled.

The interstate reopened at 11 a.m.

Our crew live on the scene says traffic was backed up for miles. The interstate shut down for about 4 hours.

Sisk says weather is believed to be the cause of the accident.

WTVC was live on the scene on Facebook just after 8 a.m.
