The pilot has been identified as 63-year-old Richard Hogan of Cartersville, Georgia.

Investigators say Hogan was on an experimental flight testing out a new plane, when it suddenly crashed less than a mile from the Calhoun airport.

Hogan owned Commuter Craft, a company that designed airplanes.

FAA and NTSB investigators are on the scene this morning.

The Gordon County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a plane crash Saturday afternoon near homes on Spencer Drive in Southwest Calhoun. The coroner has been called to the scene.

According to the Gordon Gazette Facebook page, witnesses of the crash said that the single-engine plane crashed behind Emerald Ridge subdivision around 3:30 pm.

The Gazette also reports, "A 16-year-old in the neighborhood was one of the first on the scene of the crash and said the pilot, a male, was dead on scene."
