McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy is alerting the public about a man who walked into an Athens church while wearing a backpack and acting suspiciously on Sunday.

The incident happened at the West View Baptist Church on State Highway 39.

Sheriff Guy says at about 10:50 a.m., a white Ford Fusion with Kentucky plates parked at the church before services.

Shortly after, a man in his mid- to late-50s carried a green backpack into the church, and Guy says he "acted suspiciously before leaving the church around 11 a.m."

The man was seen driving toward Athens on Highway 39.

Sheriff Guy describes the man as white, with brown eyes and dark hair with some streaks of gray, clean-shaven, 5'11" to 6' tall, weighing about 230 pounds, and wearing dirty wireframe glasses.

If you have any information on this person, or see this vehicle, call 911 immediately so the McMinn County Sheriffs Office can investigate further.

Sheriff Guy says, "As always, we encourage citizens to be always vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity anywhere at any time. "If you see it, say it""
