Hit and run accident injures 2-year-old boy in Cleveland Thursday
The Cleveland Police Department confirms officers are working a hit and run accident involving a child Thursday afternoon. The child is now in stable condition at the hospital.
The accident happened just after noon on Wilson Avenue Southeast.
Cleveland Police spokeswoman Sgt. Evie West says a mother with three children, all under the age of 2, was walking on Wilson Avenue when it started to rain heavily.
The woman had the two-year-old boy in a stroller, and put it under a tree while she moved the other two younger children across the street to a place at a residence that was dry.
Sgt. West said that the mother told officers she turned her back for just a second, and the child had gotten out of his stroller.
West says then, the child tried to cross the road. A dark-colored truck headed northbound came to a stop - but then started again, and hit the child.
West says the child was alert and talking to first responders after the accident, and had a redness to his torso area.
He was rushed to Children's Hospital in Chattanooga to be checked out.
West says this is an example of why it's important for drivers to be completely aware of their surroundings. She says three people witnessed the accident, and officers are now searching for the truck responsible.
