A grandmother and her granddaughter are recovering after escaping their home when a fire erupted in their basement.

Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner says the fire broke out a little after 5 p.m. at a home on Bay Pointe Drive.

CFD Training Chief William Andrews happened to be in the area and responded to the scene, along with firefighters with seven fire companies.

Firefighters with Engine 11 were the first on the scene and they located the fire in the basement.

Chief Andrews said the firefighters made an aggressive fire attack and had the fire out within 15 minutes, containing the fire damage to the basement. The rest of the house had some smoke and water damage. No one was hurt.

A 75 year-old-woman and her 8-year-old granddaughter were home when the fire broke out, but they got out of the house uninjured.

Chief Andrews said the dollar loss was estimated at around $15,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
