GBI agents arrest Ringgold police officer, charge him with aggravated sexual assault
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested and charged a Ringgold City Police Officer Blake Ballew with aggravated sexual assault, violation of oath of office, and false imprisonment.
The GBI says it was requested by the Varnell Police Department after a woman came to their station to report a sexual assault. The woman made the report on Thursday, August 22nd.
The GBI tells NewsChannel 9 that Ballew met the woman while on duty, and that the assault also happened while he was on duty.
The GBI says interviews and review of physical evidence led them to arrest Ballew. He was booked into Catoosa County Jail.
NewsChannel 9 filed an open records request with the City of Ringgold for more information. On Wednesday, we received copies of internal letters between Ringgold Police Department Chief Dan Bilbrey, Captain Chris Faulk, and Officer Ballew.
A letter marked August 22 from Captain Faulk said that Ballew was put on paid administrative leave as an internal investigation was opened into allegations of inappropriate misconduct.
Four days later, on August 26, Chief Bilbrey sent Ballew a termination letter, saying that the internal investigation's findings were sustained.
One letter provided says his start date with the department was March 25, 2019.
