ORIGINAL STORY:
The Gordon County Fire Department says fire destroyed the Gordon County Animal Shelter on Wednesday.
An investigator will be on the scene Thursday morning at the site on Harris Beamer Road.
Firefighters report that two cats died in the fire, but most of the animals were recovered. A total of 23 dogs were housed inside; firefighters say three of them ran off.
The Calhoun Animal Shelter is now taking care of the remaining 20 dogs and other recovered animals. Plans are still being made to solicit the public to take over caring for these animals.
The department told WSB-TV in Atlanta that the building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters finally managed to get the fire under control shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
There's still no word on what caused the fire.
