UPDATE: Truck driver charged in Monday's deadly Dade County accident

The Dade County Sheriff's Office has filed charges against the driver who caused Monday's deadly accident.

35-year-old Stephen W. Farmer of Fort Payne, Alabama is charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to yield when entering the roadway. Both of those charges are misdemeanors.

DCSO spokesman Chad Payne says early information suggests that the tractor-trailer was trying to merge on to the interstate from the side of the road, when a passenger car struck the rear of the trailer, killing the driver. Payne adds the other two vehicles crashed as a result of the initial crash between the tractor-trailer and passenger car. in addition to the unidentified driver being killed, two other drivers were hurt.

This is the third crash involving a fatality in Dade County since Friday.

The Dade County Sheriff's Office says at least one person is dead after a crash involving three cars and a tractor trailer Monday evening.

It happened around 6:25 p.m. on I-59 Southbound at the Slygo Road exit.

DCSO spokesman Chad Payne says the other drivers have non-life-threatening injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

A separate crash happened on I-59 south of Trenton earlier Monday afternoon.

One person was taken by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition in that crash.
