Couple's love for gardening is feeding several neighbors battling health conditions
A Cleveland couple's love for gardening is also feeding several neighbors who are battling health conditions.
On this week's Pay It Forward, Jessica Harthorn surprises them as they drop off a hot meal.
Jim and Elsie Burt love to cook. They take fresh vegetables from their garden and whip up homemade meals every night.
Over time, Elsie says she kept telling Jim to make more and more food so they could share the meal with their neighbors who fell on hard times.
There's one thing you'll notice about Jim and Elsie Burt's backyard. There's a big garden growing fresh herbs in January.
That's Chuck Elrod. He lives on the other side of the fence.
"This is where we meet, right at the fence," said Chuck.
Chuck says for the past several years, the Burts will pass over the metal a hot meal two to three times a week.
"Cooked chicken and rice, salad with ham and potatoes," described Chuck.
The menu is a big one!
This afternoon, the Elrods invited their family over expecting the Burt's to stop by with another tasty concoction, because they knew Barbara had surgery the next day and wanted to help.
"A good neighbor, a caring neighbor," said Chuck.
Suddenly, we were got off guard as Elsie snuck in the back door, but it was Chuck who had the FINAL surprise.
"Well hi there..." said Chuck.
"No, No, NO," said Elsie as she ran around the corner.
"Come here!" laughed Chuck.
As Elsie hid from our camera, Jim walked around the corner.
"Hi, how are ya?" said Jim.
"Jim, on behalf of Newschannel 9..." started Chuck.
"Hello! Nice to meet ya, I'm that crazy neighbor back there. This is my girl here," said Jim as he hugged Barbara.
"She won't come in here? Well then, I'll go in there then," said Barbara.
"Jim on behalf of Newschannel 9 and the McMahan Law Firm, we want to Pay It Forward for the things that you do, you and Elsie do for the neighbors. The food you prepare," surprised Chuck.
"We didn't do anything. I can't accept that," said Jim.
"Well, give it to your best charity. Here's $500," said Chuck.
Eventually, Jim gave in and accepted the money, then he popped the top to his famous ginger carrots.
Within minutes, the Elrod family and the neighbors who take care of them, enjoyed the meal together.
"I love all our neighbors so much," said Jim.
