Cleveland shop owners band together to take on Small Business Saturday
Several locally owned businesses in Chattanooga have their doors wide open this weekend for the 10th official Small Business Saturday. Created by American Express in 2010, the Saturday following Thanksgiving became an effort aimed to get more customers through the doors of small businesses and has grown to become a permanent fixture of the holiday shopping weekend.
Mainstreet Cleveland is kicking off Small Business Saturday with numerous stores offering discounts and savings. Five businesses created a "punch card" system, through which customers are incentivized to go to each shop in order to be entered to win a prize pack from the businesses.
"All of the small businesses try to rally together and support each other," said Jodi Walters, who owns a boutique, "Element" on Mainstreet Cleveland.
"All of the local businesses that are owned by Clevelanders here in Cleveland are, you know, much more able to adapt to the community," said Brittany Durkin, who owns Terra Running Co. next to "Element."
A customer at Durkin's shop listed a few reasons why they often choose to shop locally.
"The service is always much better, the return polices are always much friendlier," said Eric Frix, who lives in Cleveland.
Durkin says Small Business Saturday provides an optimistic outlook for the remainder of the holiday shopping surge.
"We're really excited about the possibility of this day that the community can come out not just today, but for the rest of the holiday season," she said.
