Chattanooga Police are now looking for the driver responsible for injuring an officer during a traffic stop early Monday morning.

Police say the driver of a yellow Ford Mustang the officer stopped suddenly hit the gas, striking the officer in the hand. It happened just after 1 a.m. on West 25th Street, near Williams Street.

Police say the officer wasn't hurt badly, but will likely get an x-ray of his hand once the scene was clear.

The driver crashed his vehicle into a nearby tree and utility pole. He got out of his car and ran off. Police have still not located him, and have not yet released a description.

This all started with what police are calling a "consensual encounter" at the 2400 block of Williams Street.

When they started speaking to the driver, officers say he began acting fidgety and that's when he slammed on the gas and sped off.

That's when the side mirror hit one of the officers hands so hard, it bent the mirror.

EPB crews were called to the scene to replace damaged power lines. The street remains closed while that work continues.

Depend on us as we continue to follow this developing story.
