The Chattanooga Fire Department battled a massive fire coming from the roof of the Hills at Oakwood Apartments near Highway 58 Thursday evening.

CFD shared video from the 4400 block of Oakwood Drive just before 8 p.m. Fire Chief Phil Hyman said it was a quick fire that destroyed seven apartment units.

Chief Hyman says crews were able to save three units.

Hyman says everyone got out of the building that was on fire, and no one was injured or trapped inside.

"Some of the firefighters did rescue some cats, so we know that there's been some pets in there but that's all that I know at this point," said Hyman.

The smoke could be seen from nearby Highway 58.

CFD says the structure has been heavily damaged. About 40 firefighters worked to contain the fire to the right side of the building, and say they have the attic fire under control.

NewsChannel 9's Sydney Edwards reported from the scene.

As of Thursday night, investigators are not sure how the fire started.

Some 'junior reporters' we met there told us they were very grateful for the hours of work firefighters put in to extinguish the blaze.
