CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. — Routine election procedures are under scrutiny now more than ever, as the nation battles with its trust in the voting process.
With just two weeks until the pivotal U.S. Senate runoff elections in Georgia, a Texas-based organization called "True the Vote" is looking at the validity of hundreds of thousands of voter registrations all over the state.
On Tuesday, the Catoosa County Elections Board looked at a particular challenge the group made about the registration status of 249 residents in the county.
True the Vote questioned the addresses of those Catoosa County residents - but today, the issue was dismissed.
The Catoosa County Elections Board voted not to move forward with the challenge, saying there wasn't probable cause.
The Board presented a state statute that specifies two reasons the challenge can't be met.
Firstly, the electors on the list of 249 people need 30 days' notice that their address is being questioned. We are now just two weeks from the January 5th runoff elections.
Second, any questioning has to be done within 90 days of the general election.
With no probable cause, the issue was dismissed. It's possible to be addressed later, but not before the runoff elections.
We reached out to other counties in our area.
Walker County election officials said they have not been challenged by True the Vote.
Whitfield County says 175 names there have been challenged, and they will discuss moving forward or dismissing the challenge Wednesday night.
