3 from Athens arrested in deadly Polk County shooting

Authorities in Polk County say they have arrested three people in connection last week's shootings in Polk County that left one person dead one other injured.

The shooting happened last Wednesday (January 10th) at a home on the 9800 block of Highway 411 in Polk County.

Sheriff Steve Ross says Thursday that three people known by the three victims came to the Delano home for a "transaction of property."

Sheriff Ross says at some point during the negotiation, a fight started, and one of the suspects pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Charles D. Buffkin of Polk County was shot and is now recovering from his wound. Timothy Maklain Lawson from Bradley County was shot and died from the wound. James Meeks of Bradley County was not injured.

Sheriff Ross says two of the three suspects arrested are juveniles, and he will not identify them. Both are charged with felony murder and especially aggravated robbery.

Deputies also arrested 18-year-old Robert Jerome Benton Athens and charged him with felony murder and especially aggravated Robbery and is being held with no bond at the Polk County Jail.

Sheriff Ross praised his investigators and deputies, McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy and his staff along with Bradley County Sheriff’s Crime lab personnel and District Attorney General Steve Crump’s Office for what he calls "their valuable assistance to resolve this incident swiftly."
