It's the first time since 1945 that Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday. The two days are traditionally observed in opposite ways.

Ash Wednesday is one of two days in the Catholic church that requires fasting.

Father Blatchford with Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chattanooga described the importance of fasting and penance.

"It is the duty under Divine Law, meaning what God has asked us to do, for every Christian to do penance... especially during Lent when we are commemorating Christ's sacrifice for us on the cross," says Father Blatchford, "Taking on that penance is absolutely paramount."

The fast on these days is not a complete fast, although the amount of meals are limited. Those meals are not supposed to include meat- another obstacle in celebrating Valentine's Day Dinners.

St. John's Restaurant in Chattanooga says that they are prepared for anything.

The restaurant tells NewsChannel 9 that they have been preparing for weeks. Second only to New Years, Valentine's Day is their busiest holiday.

General Manager Michelle Richards says "We have many vegetarian and even vegan options. It is one of the things we pride ourselves on."

"We go full force," Richards says.
