3 charged in DeKalb County for crimes involving children

DeKalb County, Alabama Sheriff Jimmy Harris says two men are behind bars on charges of sexually abusing children under the age of 12, and a third man is also behind bars, charged with trying to contact a minor on a social media app.

Harris says during the week of May 7th, DeKalb County investigators started looking into a possible sexual abuse case involving children under the age of 12.

During the course of the investigation, James Michael Perego (above, left), was arrested at his residence on County Road 723 in Henagar on May 11th, and was charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a child under 12 and sodomy 2nd.He is currently being held in the DeKalb County jail awaiting bond.

During the continuation of this investigation, Harris says another person of interest, James Lee Britton Jr, (above, center) was located and arrested at his residence at Mississippi St in Henagar. Harris says Britton was charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a child under 12 and resisting arrest. Britton is currently being held in the DeKalb County jail and is awaiting bond.

In an unrelated case, Sheriff Harris says recently the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that James Hulgan (above, left) of Valley Head had been having inappropriate activity involving minors on a popular social media account, called Kik Messenger.

Kik messenger, commonly called Kik, is an instant messaging mobile app that can be used on both androids and iPhones. On this app, a user does not have to link their phone number or use their real name.

Sheriff Harris says after an in-depth investigation by the FBI and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, a search warrant was executed on May 14th at Hulgan's house on County Road 751. Hulgan was arrested on the same date and charged with 2 counts of possession of obscene matter containing visual depiction of a person under 17 years of age. Hulgan, who is currently a registered sex offender in DeKalb County, is being held in the DeKalb County jail awaiting bond.

There are many different apps on social media now and you never know who you are dealing with on these sites. Parents need to be aware of what sites or apps your child is using while on their phones. “
