The Murray County Sheriff's Office says a 2-year-old girl died after being hit by a car Tuesday evening. Now, local and state authorities are investigating.

Chief Deputy Jimmy Davenport says it happened around 7:20 p.m. on Old Dalton Elijay Road at Diamond Way, a residential area of Chatsworth.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) says two unattended 2 year olds walked into the northbound side of Old Dalton Ellijay Road as a Nissan pickup truck was heading north. The GSP says the driver swerved to try and avoid the children, and hit a Dodge pickup truck head-on. The GSP says the Nissan pickup truck hit one of the toddlers, a 2-year-old girl. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The GSP says all three people in the Nissan truck and the driver of the Dodge truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Davenport says the driver of the Nissan truck did not know the little girl. GSP says all parties involved are from Murray County.

GSP and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) have joined the sheriff's office in the investigation.

The GSP says no charges are expected for either driver in this case. Davenport says a thorough investigation into what happened is underway.
