Ringgold teen auditions for American Idol, anxiously awaits call back
The search is on for the next American Idol, and that person could be coming from our area.
Thousands came out to Piedmont Park in Atlanta for auditions Tuesday driving from near and far.
Some walked away lucky; others - not so much.
"I didn't get it, but it ain't nothing to me. It ain't no sweat off my back," said Austin Zackary from Dalton.
This is Zackary's second time auditioning for American Idol, so he knew how the process would work.
Our cameras weren't allowed to record during any of the auditions, but Zackary tells us how it went.
"You get in a line of four, and they go down the row and then tell the person to walk up and the next person walks back. You'll walk up and you'll sing and you'll walk back. They won't say nothing to you. Then after the whole line is done, they call you up and they either tell you yes or no," Zackary explained.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get the nod of approval, but he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.
"I got band practice Thursday and then this coming Saturday I've got a BBQ and Blues that I gotta do in Dalton," Zackary added.
17-year-old Nicholas Hickman also made the drive to Atlanta. He skipped school for the audition, and it seemed to work out for him.
"They called three people up and they said no. Then, he brought me up and I sang one more song for him and then [they] gave me a chance," Hickman told NewsChannel 9.
He'll now play the waiting game as he heads back to Ringgold and anxiously awaits a call back.
"I was shocked because I had met some of the other people that were in line with me, that were in my group, and gosh - she was phenomenal. It shocked me whenever he sent her the other way and I was like, 'there's no way this is right. They got the wrong paper.' But, no they didn't and I'm ecstatic," Hickman said. "So excited!"
Hickman sang My Girl by the Temptations and the Power of Love by Celine Dion.
Zackary will play at the Dalton BBQ and Blues this Saturday from 6-7 p.m. He will also play at the Tiny House Festival in Chattanooga in September.
American Idol airs on ABC in 2018.
