'Conservative' training chosen by School Board met with concern from one HCS parent

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — In the past few years, Tennessee lawmakers approved legislation banning some curriculum in classrooms. In an effort to keep what they call "prohibited concepts", from being taught in your child's school. But whose job is it to spot these ideas in a school's curriculum?
One Hamilton County school board member is attending training to do just that, but the group leading that training says they've been accused of leaning conservative.Hamilton County District 8 school board member, Larry Grohn as a former history teacher, chose to attend a Unity Training Solutions class on Prohibited Concepts in Tennessee Curriculum. It's taught by Carol Swain, a former Political Science Professor at Vanderbilt.
Swain says the training helps school board members spot violations of Tennessee's prohibitive concepts, like no race or sex is superior and promoting the overthrow of the government.
We make sure people know the state statues, the new prohibitive concepts law," Swain tells us,"I know that we that there have been people that have said, you know, this is conservative training, it's not conservative training.
One Hamilton County parent, Dan Strickland, says school board members should not be influenced in anyway by politics. He says it doesn't have a place in the classroom.
School board members should be apolitical, they're not, you know, they become more and more political and politics doesn't have a place in education, especially when it comes to history," says Strickland.
Strickland says if you're going to teach history, you need to teach ALL of it.
"By taking a class that aligns with your values, you're showing that you're afraid to see that your values might be wrong," says Strickland.

We asked School Board Member Larry Grohn what he learned.
"If they're talking about teaching, the real history of the United States and starting with the Founding Fathers and the Judeo-Christian foundations that our country was built upon, which is all historical fact. If they're talking about being conservative in that regard, well, then they can brand me conservative," says School Board member Larry Grohn.
Swain maintains the worries are unfounded. And the training stays focused on where it should be.
This is not, you know, the conservative right wing training. This is training that focuses very much on the state law." Swaine says.
The course costs $400 and is paid for by the Hamilton County School district.
Unity Training Solutions is one of only two companies that provide training outside of the Tennessee School Board Association but the board still approves their training materials.
