Hamilton County schools try new program to boost reading levels

The Hamilton County school system is trying out a new program to raise the reading skills in struggling schools.

Ten low-performing elementary and middle schools are using the program Reading Intervention for Student Express (RISE).

The goal of RISE is to get the students reading at grade level.

Guided Reading Specialists work with students every day on reading comprehension and writing skills.

The leaders say they are seeing fast results.

"Just to see the gains from week to week is amazing, and the students get so excited to see here's where they started and here's where they are now", says Ranita Glenn, a Guided Reading Specialist at Hardy Elementary.

Glenn is one of the 15 specialists hired by the district for the RISE program.
