In the mid-1940's Eugene South fought across Europe in World War II.

His family says Mr. South passed away 2 hours and 45 minutes after he turned 100 years old.

Yesterday some who loved him and some who never knew him stood on the same ground to honor his life and sacrifice.

Eugene South received 5 Bronze stars in World War II.

He served across Europe .with the 237th Engineer battalion

Motorcycle riders came here to honor a decorated world war 2 veteran. Some just saw a post on social media and they know there won't be many more opportunities

"This man saw the real stuff. Stuff you can't imagine unless you've seen it yourself," R.T. Cutcher said. Mr. Cutcher came to the funeral service to honor Mr. South even though he never met him.

Eugene South fought in World War II.

He then came home and grew a family.

This week that family and many others celebrated an American hero's life and sacrifice.

According to VA estimates from a year ago we lose 234 U.S. World War II veterans every day.
