Army veteran Lance Deal will be laid to rest Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery
In the Price of Freedom, over the last several days we've been telling you about an Army veteran who passed away last week and has no family to honor him at his funeral on Wednesday.
Today, we went to find people who knew Lance Deal to learn more about this Army veteran's life.
Richard Lance Deal was working to turn his life around.
"He was determined that he was going to get back on his feet again, for some individuals it takes them years to be able to do that," Kimberly Crider, Senior Community Service Employment Program Director at Chattanooga Goodwill Industries said. "Lance was homeless for 10 years and still he never gave up."
He started working in the Seniors Community Service Employment Program at Goodwill in July. He worked as an assistant to the transportation director helping to move donations and other items around the area.
"He had this quirky sense of humor," Kimberly Crider said. "He would joke around a lot with his supervisors, his co-workers, and that really endeared him to them."
Mickey McCamish met Lance in June through his work with the Southeast Tennessee Veterans Coalition.
"We reach out and help veterans, and Lance came to one of our meetings," McCamish said.
He started working with the VA and other organizations, and had gotten into permanent housing a few weeks ago.
He passed away Last Monday.
Mickey says Lance Deal does have living relatives but they haven't had a relationship for some time.
He's asking for anyone who can make it to come honor Lance Deal at the Chattanooga Cemetery on Wednesday. They want people to be in place by 12:15PM.
"it's about celebrating his life of where he had come and where he was a contributor back into he community," McCamish said.
Another interesting part of this story while we were at the cemetery today.
We learned there was another veteran with no family being laid to rest today.
We talked to officials at the cemetery they told me this does happen where veterans have no family to attend their funerals but it is rare at Chattanooga National.
Wednesday's funeral will take place at Shelter B in the Cemetery.
