The City of Collegedale is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend.

City leaders hired a local artist to create a mural for the newly built Founders Hall at The Commons.

We caught up with artist Ali Kay as she put the finishing touches on the painting.

"For me it's all about the color and the shapes," Kay said. "We have all these different images and different people from different times, but they're all connected through the color and the brush strokes."

In the mural, Collegedale's founders are blended together with historical buildings for a fresh take on the city's past.

"They wanted it to be like a real contemporary, vibrant piece," Kay said. "They didn't want it to feel like an old historical mural, that can be a little dry."

Ali isn't afraid to use bright colors, blended seamlessly together throughout her work.

"Right now I'm working on this little crowd of people, which is super tedious and challenging, but when I step back I really like it."

To create this look, Ali doesn't stay in one spot too long.

"I try not to get stuck in just one area."

Ali started the mural with pictures given to her by city leaders.

"They sent me all the images they wanted me to use and then I created the design in photoshop, putting them all together in the places they would go."

She's been working on this for about a month. Murals are one of her favorite things to paint.

"I really like being given a subject and then figuring out how to make it look awesome, and that's kind of my version of self expression."

Collegedale will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary this Sunday at Founders Hall.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m.
