October 2017 in Chattanooga was both warmer and wetter than average.
The average temperature was 63.5 degrees which was 2 degrees above average. The hottest afternoon was on October 10th with a high of 88 degrees. The coldest morning was on the 30th when the mercury bottomed out below freezing at 30 degrees. In fact, both the 29th and 30th had low temperatures below freezing for the first freezes of the season. Even though October 2017 was warmer than average, it was cooler than the extremely warm October of 2016 when the average temperature was 68.2 degrees.
Chattanooga's Lovell Field recorded 6.10" of rain for the monthly total. This ended up being 2.82" above average and the 14th wettest October on record. The heaviest rain fell on the 8th with 3.65". This was associated with the remnants of "Nate" moving through. That rainfall alone would have put us above average for the month. The second wettest day was on the 23rd with 1.20". October 2017 was much wetter than the record driest October of 2016 when only 0.08" was recorded.
