High school football is literally just days away.

In our continuing look at area teams, we turn our focus to the Lookout Valley Yellowjackets.

They have a new head coach, but he is certainly no stranger to the program.

Lance Rorex has paced the sidelines as ans assistant at Lookout Valley before.

But in June he took over as head coach when Tony Webb left for Signal Mountain.

Rorex referred to Webb an awesome coach, "We're going to do things different, but we're still building off the mentality that he left us."

Rorex said that includes being competitive and disciplined.

Yellowjackets players seem drawn to the new coach.

Junior offensive lineman Gavin Slaven described playing under Rorex. "Hes been a great help, benefited us in a great way. He brings more intensity than coach Webb did last year and I have a great feeling about him," Slaven said.

The new coach led Lookout Valley's baseball before shifting to the gridiron. "It's nice to be able to reach more kids. With baseball, we kind of had a select few I've got to know over the years. Football, it's been nice to get new kids out, talk to some new kids, build some relationships with 'em. It's also been awesome to see the community support."

The Yellowjackets return eight offensive players and will run a wing-T offense.

They have a small roster of about 25 to 30 kids.

But the new coach says nothing compares to Friday night. "I played in a lot of big baseball games, but there's nothing like a Friday night. When the lights come on, the stands fill up and you can smell the hot dogs and hamburgers being made. The teams walk in, there's nothing like that feeling," Rorex said.

His passion for the game is obvious.

And his players know his heart is squarely connected to Lookout Valley.

Slaven put it this way, "He has a lot of nostalgia here. He is the leading wide receiver here at Lookout Valley. It's his alma mater. He loves this school to death."
