UTC to Pay Tribute to Darrell Patterson Tuesday Night
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will honor NewsChannel 9 Sports Director Darrell Patterson at the Tuesday night basketball game versus Kennesaw State.
Darrell has announced that he will be retiring effective December 12 after nearly 40 years of broadcasting at NewsChannel 9. Of course Darrell has reported on and supported UTC throughout his career. In fact when he was first hired to work part-time at NewsChannel 9, he was working as the voice of the Mocs on WDOD radio.
Tonight UTC officials have prepared a special halftime presentation and video tribute to Darrell. We hope all the UTC regulars as well as Darrell's fans will turn out in support of a Chattanooga sports legend.
Jim Reynolds, the current "Voice of the Mocs," helped spearhead the tribute.
"Anybody who has done as much for UTC and sports in general, and worked as hard as Darrell has for nearly 40 years deserves that and much more," said Reynolds. "I'm afraid that people take Darrell for granted. They really won't really realize how good he is until he's gone."
Reynolds also shared one telling story of how much he appreciates and respects Darrell.
"Many years ago one of Channel 9's competitors talked to me about becoming their sports anchor," said Reynolds. "I asked them, 'How are we going to beat Darrell Patterson.' They didn't have a good answer, so I didn't take the job."
The game starts at 7 pm at the McKenzie Arena. The Mocs are 2-1 on the year, 2-0 at home. Tonight is the final in a series of three home games. Chattanooga has a 4-1 series advantage against Kennesaw State. This is coach Will Wade's first season leading the Mocs. General admission tickets range from $5 to $8.
