Softball Mocs Prepare For Dawgs
The Chattanooga softball Mocs went through a spirited practice this afternoon, with good reason.
Fresh off winning the Southern Conference Championship, the Mocs have their eyes set on bigger things, namely the NCAA Regionals.
Their focus is also on one team, the host team in Athens, Georgia -- the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs are a number one seed in that region, and a number four seed in the country.
Coach Frank Reed said his team will be ready. "Our goal is to go as far as we can. We've been close a couple of times and got a three seed a couple of years ago. But when you know you're going up against a one seed and we're actually going against the number four seed in the country, so we're going to have to play a good game."
This is the Mocs ninth time in the NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Criket Blanco may provide some insight about the Dawgs. She played for them as a freshman before transferring to UTC. "They're a very tough team. They're very scrappy, they're very competitive, they won't go down easy. But if we just do what we do, then we can hang in there with them," Blanco said.
Pitching ace Katie Henderson felt confident about the match-up. "I think we have to take that same mentality (from winning the Southern Conference) and carry it into this weekend too. Georgia prepares the same way we do, it's no different. We can definitely give them a run for their money, I think," Henderson said.
The Mocs depart early Thursday morning and square off against the Dawgs on Friday. Play is double elimination in the Regionals.
