Mocs Tull Is UTC's First Football Academic All-American
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team had a season filled with many firsts in 2013. First Southern Conference Championship since 1984, eight wins for the first time since 1980 and six SoCon wins for the first time ever are at the top of the team accomplishments.
Individually, junior Davis Tull became the first Moc to repeat as SoCon Player of the Year when the leagues coaches chose him as the top defensive player in the conference.
Tull added another major first when the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) chose him as the first Capital One Academic All-American in program history today.
This is the fourth year in a row UTC has had at least one Capital One Academic All-American. Tull joins volleyballs Christina Teter (2012) and Track & Fields Chris Berry (2012) and David Moore (2011) as four of the 11 Academic All-Americans in school history.
A two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree, Tull carries a 3.52 g.p.a. as a Health & Human Performance major. He was an Academic All-SoCon selection in 2012, the same year he won his first SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Tull led the league in sacks for the second straight season, posting 9.0 in 2013. He is leagues first repeat defensive player of the year since Appalachian States Dexter Coakley took the award three straight times from 1994-96.
Tull posted 52 tackles on the season (37 solo), with 15.0 going for lost yardage. The Knoxville, Tenn., native had a league-best four forced fumbles with one recovery and led the Mocs with eight quarterback hurries. He is also a finalist for the Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in FCS.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution. The Academic All-America team is chosen from all Division I football programs, including both the FBS and FCS institutions.
