The Chattanooga Mocs ended an eight-day layoff Tuesday night with a game at the Roundhouse... hosting the Hiwassee College Tigers... a National Christian College team out of Madisonville... winners only once in their first 9 games... but you sure couldn't tell it by the way the played in the first 15 minutes or so.
With Howie Meadows and Justin Browner leading the charge, the Tigers worked their way into the lead, and kept it for much of the first half... much to the chagrin of Mocs coach Will Wade, who got up close and personal with his team during one of the breaks.
I reckon that little talk created some chaos, as the Mocs closed the first half on a 9-0 run to take a 39-36 lead into the locker room. Z Mason had 22 of those 39 points.
The senior out of Nashville kept up that torrid pace in the second half, finishing with a career high 41 points. He also pulled down 12 rebounds, becoming the first UTC player since Oliver Morton in 2000 to score at least 30 points and get at least 10 rebounds in a game... and Z's the first Moc in the divison 1 era to score at least 40 and get at least 10 rebounds in a game! Way to go, Zaccheus!
Casey Jones added 17 points, Marty Barieka had 10 as the Mocs pulled away for an 86-68 win, as the Mocs up their record to 4-6... but only 1 of those wins has been over a division 1 team.
The Mocs play at Northern Kentucky Sunday, then at UAB a week from tomorrow before coming back to the Roundhouse to host Middle TN State, Maine and Grand Canyon in the Dr. Pepper Classic December 29th and 30th.
The Lady Mocs continued their eight-game road trip Monday night, playing at Jacksonville State. Ashlen Dewart scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Taylor Hall had 10 points and 11 boards, Megan Downes 10 points in the Lady Mocs 68-53 win, which runs their record to 6-3.
