The UTC football Mocs did not win the SoCon championship... they did not get an invite to the FCS playoffs... but they did finish with a 6-5 record... their third winning record in the last four years... something that hasn't happened since the mid-80's.
And on Tuesday, sophomore defensive end Davis Tull was named the SoCon defensive player of the year.
The Knoxville native set the UTC single season record for sacks and tackles-for-loss this season, finishing with 12-and-a-half sacks and 19 tackles for loss... that's second-best in the nation in sacks, 6th in tackles for loss. Not bad for a guy who broke his leg his senior year in high school and wound up coming to UTC as a walk-on.
Tull is the first sophomore to win this award since App State's Dexter Coakley in 1994.
Junior linebacker Wes Dothard, who led the Mocs in tackles, joins Tull on the coaches first team defense. Juniors DJ Key, Kadeem Wise and Derrick Lott were on the second team, as was sophomore tight-end Faysal Shaffat.
Quarterback Jacob Huesman did not win the conference freshman of the year award, but was on the All-Freshman team.
