Murray Arnold, who coached the UTC basketball Mocs to 135 wins in his six seasons in Chattanooga, died Wednesday in Florida after a long battle with cancer. The Mocs had a lot of firsts with Arnold at the helm.
They played the Tennessee Vols in the first ever game at the Roundhouse in November of 1982. At the time Arnold said that was the "biggest thing to happen to Chattanooga since the Civil War."
Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and the North Carolina Tar Heels came to town a couple of weeks later.
Arnold's Mocs had the Roundhouse rockin' for both games... Gerald Wilkins, Willie White, Stanford Strickland and the Mocs eventually losing close games, and gaining thousands of loyal fans who became known as "Arnold's Army."
The Mocs also played in and later won their first NCAA division 1 tournament games under Arnold's watch.
Coach Arnold's Mocs won 75% of their games. Five of his six teams won 21 or more games. His 1982 squad had 27 wins, tying a school record. Arnold's 83 Mocs finished the season ranked 15 in the AP poll... the highest ever end-of-the-season ranking for a Southern Conference team.
Arnold left UTC after the 1985 season to go to work for the NBA's Chicago Bulls. He returned to the college scene a year later, coaching at Western Kentucky, then finishing his career at Stetson in 2001... a 22-year coaching record of 420 wins, 229 losses.
Coach Arnold and his wife, Ann Cohn, retired in Deland, Florida, where he passed away at age 74. No word yet on the funeral plans.Former Mocs Coach Murray Arnold Dies in Florida
