Suspect identified in chase off Cummings Highway in Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. —
Sergeant Alan Bailey has confirmed with NewsChannel 9 the identity of a suspect involved in high-speed-chase.
34-year-old Jeremy Woods was arrested Friday night after police say he tried to run during a traffic stop.
Police charged Woods with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm in commission of a crime, theft of over $1000 and other charges.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer fires his gun at a man following a traffic stop and chase, Friday.
Swat teams and dozens of police cars lined the side of Highway 41.
Some weren't able to get home for hours.
Travis Sharpe lives near the area.
"They were up in the woods trying to get them and you know they had their pistols and everything they needed, tactical gear and everything," Sharpe said.
Sergeant Alan Bailey with the Tennessee Highway Patrol says it started when a trooper spotted someone speeding.
"A trooper clocked a vehicle, a motorcycle, at approximately 79 miles per hour," Sgt. Bailey said.
Sgt. Bailey says the man tried to avoid the trooper and eventually lost him.
Then, the trooper spotted him coming out of Wilcox Road.
He got off the motorcycle at the intersection and started to run into the woods.
They say the suspect pulled a gun out and threatened suicide.
The trooper tried to talk him out of it.
Then, THP says the suspect turned the gun on the trooper. They say the trooper then fired two shots at the man.
No one was injured.
A little more than an hour later, the suspect was captured.
Sgt. Bailey says after the fact, they realized the motorcycle was stolen.
