Dalton Police say an officer caught a man huffing Freon from an air conditioning unit outside a downtown gym.

Dalton Police spokesperson Bruce Frazier tells NewsChannel 9 Mitchell Harrison was arrested and admitted to tampering with several units around town in order to get high.

"We suspected that it was someone using the Freon to get high because in one of the cases, the people found that someone actually vomited nearby," said Frazier.

Police confirmed their suspicions Wednesday night.

According to an incident report, an officer patrolling the downtown area heard "a loud, high pitched noise" that "sounded like compressed air escaping from a pressure valve."

He says he found Harrison "actively huffing Freon" from the AC unit at Super Body Fitness Center.

Ruth David owns the gym. She says she first realized her air conditioning was not working after turning it back on after Memorial Day.

"I noticed that our aerobics floor was not getting cool like it normally does," said David.

A technician came by and refilled the Freon, but then she was hit a second time Wednesday night. Now she has to get the unit refilled again.

"People like me that are doing the right thing and making a living, it's affecting us a lot," said David.

Fortunately, Dalton Police say they don't anticipate that huffing Freon will become a trend.

"I think this is probably someone with drug issues and was just really desperate to get high," said Frazier.
