Authorities at Athens Middle School sent out an alert to parents Wednesday morning saying that a student was found to have an unloaded BB gun in a backpack.

That BB gun is now secured, and the student will be disciplined, according to Principal Mike Simmons, who also credits a nationwide anti-bullying campaign with getting this situation resolved quickly and safely.

The alert went out to parents just after 9:30 a.m.

Simmons tells NewsChannel 9 that word about the BB gun in the backpack traveled quickly, and students immediately reported it to school officials.

Simmons credits the national Rachel's Challenge campaign for fostering a sense of school pride in students.

"It's become cool to care. It's become cool to want the best for your school," Simmons told us.

Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. The program created in her honor has taken root in 1,200 schools across the country, including Athens Middle School.

In fact, an assembly for Athens Elementary School to talk about Rachel's Challenge is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. However, Principal Simmons says this morning's incident will not be mentioned.
