2018 budget submitted to Hamilton Co. Commissioners Wednesday

Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger mailed a letter to Hamilton County School Board Chairman Steven Highlander asking for more participation in the budget process.

PREVIOUSLY:

On Wednesday, Hamilton County Commissioners were formally presented with a budget for fiscal year 2018 by Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger.

Coppinger had already said earlier in the week that the budget would contain no property tax increases. That's despite the recommendation of a panel of business and community leaders appointed by Coppinger to analyze Hamilton County Schools budget, who recommended the budget raise property taxes to help fix crumbling schools.

The $691.5 million budget for 2018 is $12 million more than the fiscal 2017 budget.

Hamilton County Schools are slated to get 8 million dollars, which is one third of what schools had asked for.

Here's a breakdown of some of the numbers:

EXPENDITURES by some departments:

PUBLIC WORKS

  • Last year: $22.9 mil
  • This year: $24.7 mil
  • Increase of $1.7 mil (7.7%)

HEALTH SERVICES

  • Last year: $23.2 mil
  • This year: $23 mil
  • Decrease of $239k (-1%)

This includes the loss of some grant money for different health services and less maintenance costs.

SHERIFF

  • Last year: $33.4 mil
  • This year: $35.2 mil
  • Increase of $1.8 mil (5.4%)

This includes more money towards line items like patrol, SROs, and the jail.

DEPT OF EDUCATION – GENERAL PURPOSE

  • Last year: $363 mil
  • This year: $372.6 mil
  • Increase of $9.6 mil (2.7%)

Commissioners will cast their final vote on the budget on June 21st.
