Woodwind Quintet to Perform at Lee University

Lee University’s Faculty Woodwind Quintet will perform in the next Performing Arts Series event at Lee University on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel. The Quintet includes Eric Anderson, Peter Cain, Robert Burks, Janet Hale and Gordon James.

The quintet will perform “La Cheminée du Roi” by René Darius Mihaud and “Three Shanties” by Malcolm Arnold. Faculty pianist Perry Mears will join them for a performance of the Quintet in E-flat Major, KV 452, by W. A. Mozart.

Eric Anderson, the group’s bassoonist, has been the principal bassoonist of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and Wind Quintet since 1996. He also currently plays third contrabassoon with the Alabama Symphony. Anderson earned his bachelor of music degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and completed graduate work at Rice University.

The quintet’s clarinetist, Dr. Peter Cain, studied at Vanderbilt University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and received his doctor of musical arts degree in 2012. Cain was a soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, the Paloma Wind Quintet and with the CCM Chamber Players in 2009.

Oboist Robert Burks studied under Richard Woodhams, principal oboe at Philadelphia, at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music. He was accepted into the Cleveland Institute of Music, followed by the Columbus Symphony, Honolulu Symphony and finally Chattanooga as principal oboe in 1981. He has also performed with the Atlanta Symphony on several occasions.

Janet Hale is a flutist and has played for CSO since 1972. This year marks her 40th season. Hale has studied under David vanVactor, Judith Bentley and Warren Little. She received her master’s in flute performance and a bachelor of music degree from the University of Tennessee.

Gordon James, horn, has been the principal horn for CSO since 1987. James also substitutes for the Huntsville Symphony, the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He earned degrees from Bethany Lutheran College, Peabody Conservatory and North Texas State University.

The concert is free, non-ticketed event and is open to the public.

BRAD PITT-"FURY"

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Brad Pitt says he has no problem letting his oldest son see his latest movie, "Fury." Some have criticized the film for showing the brutality of war, but Pitt says he doesn't want to shield his 13-year-old son from violent scenes in his movie -- like a soldier's body being shot to pieces by a machine gun. Pitt says when he was a kid, his dad would let him see Clint Eastwood movies and kung fu flicks. Pitt says while the world is a beautiful place, it's also "a very violent place" so he is "not so opposed" to letting him his son see that side of things. Pitt spoke at the world premiere of the movie, which was held in Washington, D.C.

Brad Pitt says he doesn't feel the need to shield his kids from violence in movies.

JOAN RIVERS-CORONER'S REPORT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Joan Rivers' daughter says she has no comment on a ruling from the New York City Medical Examiner's office about her mom's death. The ME's office says Rivers died from low blood oxygen that came about during a routine medical procedure to check out voice changes and acid reflux. The report says Rivers suffered brain damage because of the lack of oxygen -- and the death is classified as a complication of a medical procedure. The state Health Department also is looking into Rivers' death on Sept. 4.

AP correspondent Warren Levinson reports the New York City medical examiner found Joan Rivers died of low blood oxygen.

MISTY UPHAM-BODY

SEATTLE (AP) -- It looks like authorities near Seattle have found actress Misty Upham -- but it isn't good news. Authorities say a woman's body was found in a ravine near the White River in Washington state yesterday afternoon. And they say, items with Upham's name on them were nearby. Officials are waiting for the medical examiners to make a positive ID and determine a cause of death. Upham went missing about 10 days ago. She was 32 and had roles in "August: Osage County," "Frozen River" and "Django Unchained."

JASON REITMAN-INTERNET

NEW YORK (AP) -- He isn't quite as out of touch as the woman on the TV ad who posts photos to her bedroom "wall," "de-friends" people in person and plays Candy Crush Saga with real candy pieces and a hammer. But Jason Reitman says he really doesn't get the Internet the way younger people do. Reitman is 37 but says when he talks to teens, they "might as well be 100 years younger" -- because the way they live is nothing like the way he grew up. The technology-fueled generation gap is the basis of his new movie "Men, Women & Children," which opens in wide release today. Reitman says the thing that makes him most uncomfortable about the online generation is the ease with which young people share their lives online -- while they often fail to make the same effort to communicate with their parents and others under the same roof with them.

Jason Reitman says a basic question led him to make the movie "Men, Women and Children" - which discusses the effect of the Internet on relationships.

<<CUT ..007 (10/17/14)>> 00:15 "my parents' childhood"

Jason Reitman

Jason Reitman says the Internet-enabled world has put a gulf between older and younger people that didn't exist before.

QUVENZHANE WALLIS-DOGS

NEW YORK (AP) -- Quvenzhane (kweh-VEHN'-zhah-nay) Wallis is going to the dogs. Not career-wise -- but pet wise. She travels with her 8-year-old Yorkie, named Sammie. She has another dog, Shuga, who is too big to travel. Wallis says she wants to be a veterinarian and helps care for her pets by making sure they are well fed and watered. She encourages other kids to "always be there" for their pets because they are their best friends. Wallis wrote the forward to a new book "My Very, Very Busy Day," the story of a dog and a cat. It's designed to teach kids about the responsibilities that come with having a pet. The 11-year-old plays "Annie," in a new film version opening in December.

NIELSENS-WALKING DEAD

NEW YORK (AP) -- Another strong week for "The Walking Dead." The latest Nielsen ratings say the AMC show got an audience of nearly 17.3 million people this past Sunday. That's a record for the series -- and for any non-sports event on basic cable. Of the top 10 shows, five of the most popular were either football games -- or football highlights.

CBS-STREAMING

NEW YORK (AP) -- CBS says it's getting ready for the next phase in how "TV" is watched. It is setting up its own video streaming service -- announcing the move the day after HBO said it will offer video streaming of its programming next year. The companies are trying to get a foothold in what is a growing audience for people watching TV online, rather than on their satellite dish or cable box. Research firm eMarketer says about 45 percent of Americans stream TV at least once a month -- with the number expected to rise to 53 percent -- or 175 million -- by 2018.
