Organizers of the International Cowpea Festival and Cook-off are pleased to announce the addition of Bush Brothers & Company as the presenting sponsor of this inaugural celebration of Charleston’s agricultural heritage. The Cowpea Festival is set for Sept. 15 starting at 10 a.m.
Every homegrown festival needs a Southern beauty to represent the event in the community. The International Cowpea Festival and Cook-off presented by Bush Brothers & Company is no exception and organizers are announcing today the “Princess and the Cowpea” Natural Beauty Pageant. The pageant will be a main stage activity at the Sept. 15 festival and will begin at 11 a.m.
Hans Christian Anderson penned the familiar fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea” where the prince searched for a true princess to be his wife. The queen confirmed the royal status of the prospective bride by placing a tiny pea under a stack of mattresses to see if the princess could sleep well with the hidden lump. A real princess is so delicate, she would be able to sense any part of the bed less than perfect, even the size of a pea.
“Our Southern beauties won’t have to pass the mattress and the pea test to be crowned a princess. Their challenge will be sharing natural beauty and sweet smiles to a panel of experienced judges,” said Christy Goins, pageant coordinator for the International Cowpea Festival and Cook-off Committee. “We are excited about the pageant component of the festival and think it will add so much to a full day of fun activities.”
Judges will award princess crowns in six categories as well as an overall Miss Cowpea Princess from the category winners. The six categories are based on contestants’ ages and include
• Baby Miss Cowpea Princess – Age 0-12 Months
• Tiny Miss Cowpea Princess – Ages 13-35 Months
• Wee Miss Cowpea Princess – Ages 3-4 Years
• Petite Miss Cowpea Princess – Ages 5-6 Years
• Young Miss Cowpea Princess – Ages 7-9 Years
• Little Miss Cowpea Princess – Ages 10-12 Years
An overall Miss Cowpea Princess will be selected from the princesses in each category. This award will be given to the contestant that the judges feel shows the best overall presentation. Personality and stage presence will play a major role in selection. Additionally, each contestant has the opportunity to submit photographs for a photogenic portion of the competition.
Complete guidelines and entry forms are available on the festival website at www.cowpeafestival.com. The entry fee for the pageant is $25 per contestant and an additional $10 to enter the photogenic competition. The deadline to enter the pageant is August 22 at this fee level. An extra charge will apply for entries after this date.
The distinction of a “natural beauty” pageant comes with certain expectations from the judges of the event. Judging will be based on natural appearance. Makeup should be minimal and look natural. Wigs, hairpieces and extensions are not permitted.
“We want to promote selection of a hometown face to represent this great festival,” Goins said. “We want our Miss Cowpea Princess to be a natural beauty who can represent the spirit of this event, a celebration of agriculture, heritage and hometown.”
“Princess and the Cowpea” is part of a day of fun planned for the International Cowpea Festival and Cook-off presented by Bush Brother’s & Company. The event is set for Sept. 15 and will begin at 10 a.m. with the pageant starting at 11.
Charleston was once known as the cowpea capital of the United States because of the large amount of peas grown in the area and shipped to markets far and away. “Cowpea” is the general name for the crowder pea, black-eyed pea, cream pea, silver-hull and other field pea varieties known as vigna unguiculata. This one-of-a-kind festival is a great way to recognize an authentic agri-heritage and celebrate a protein-rich favorite on Southern plates.
Throughout the day, the festival will feature musical artists, square dancing, clogging and storytelling from the Cleveland Storytelling Guild. A marketplace, sponsored by Farm Credit, will offer booths featuring arts and crafts, fresh produce and other goods. Food vendors will have concessions available. Booths displaying agricultural information as well as heritage information telling Charleston’s nationally significant history will be part of the festival. A children’s area will feature games, art projects, face painting and air toys. The festival website www.cowpeafestival.com includes information on activities and is being updated with more scheduled items on a daily basis.
GRAMMY Award-winning artist Suzy Bogguss will headline the festival which will be held in the Charleston Park. Bogguss will take the stage at 7 p.m.
The community is invited to participate in the cook-off portion of the event sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation. A professional and amateur chef division is available for entries using any variety of cowpea. Cowpea creations in the amateur chef division will be judged by a panel while the professional chef division will be judged by the first 500 people who purchase a souvenir spoon for $5. Spoon-holders are entitled to tasting samples from the five professional chefs as well as door prize tickets. Whirlpool is bringing five gas ranges for on-site cooking demonstrations in the park. Leading up to the event, Homestead Lawn & Tractor Co. and CPQ Professional Imaging Inc. are sponsoring a photo competition focusing on agriculture and landscape. The competition will spotlight amateur photographers, and work will be displayed at the new Hiwassee River Heritage Center in Charleston for an exhibit period. "DANCING WITH THE STARS"
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Zendaya or Kellie Pickler will be winning the mirrorball trophy. At least according to the judges' scores on "Dancing With the Stars." They both got two rounds of perfect 10s on last night's show. A single point separates Zendaya and Pickler, based on their performances in the cha-cha relay. Aly Raisman had perfect scores on her freestyle too, but not her first dance. The judges also praised Jacoby Jones. But the Baltimore Ravens' star fell short of the rest on his performances. "DANCING WITH THE STARS"-TORNADO
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Usually the audience is applauding on "Dancing With the Stars," as the show returns from a commercial break. But not on last night's show. Tom Bergeron asked the studio audience to remain silent after one break. He noted they're live and to go to air in the shadow of another tragic event. Last month, it was the Boston bombings. Last night, it was the devastating tornado in Oklahoma. Bergeron says their thoughts are with the victims and their families. Bergeron then asked the audience to applaud the first-responders who were still searching for victims as the broadcast aired.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Blake Shelton is from Oklahoma -- and he's thinking about the victims of yesterday's killer tornado. On "The Voice" last night, Shelton said people in his home state were going through "hell" but adds his family is OK. The Swon brothers are also from Oklahoma and say they're praying for the folks back home. As for the performances, Shelton says Sarah Simmons from Team Adam "just radiated sexy." Adam Levine says she had the best performance of the night.

`MIKE AND MOLLY' EPISODE PULLED
NEW YORK (AP) -- CBS pulled the season-ending episode of "Mike and Molly" off the air last night, because the plot line revolved around a tornado. The network said a rerun was broadcast instead, out of sensitivity to victims of the deadly tornado in Oklahoma. CBS says the finale will air "at an appropriate date." The plot had Mike and Molly confessing to each other as a tornado threatens Chicago.
SETH MACFARLANE REPEATS HIS PROMISE NOT TO HOST THE OSCARS AGAIN
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- He's said it once and he'll probably say it many more times in the months leading up to the Academy Awards. Seth MacFarlane says he won't return as host of the Oscars. MacFarlane says he's too busy. He tweeted that he "tried to make it work schedule-wise," but he needs at least some sleep. MacFarlane joked that the producers should hit Joaquin Phoenix to host the show.
"IDOL" AUDITIONS
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Inspired by Candice Glover? You can try out for the next "American Idol" this summer. The first tryouts will be held July 10 in Salt Lake City. Other auditions will be held in San Francisco, Detroit, Atlanta, Boston, Austin and Omaha. More cities will be announced later. You can also submit a video of you singing a-cappella online.
BROOKE WHITE TO CO-STAR IN HALLMARK CHANNEL MOVIE
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- If you've been wondering whatever happened to Brooke White from season seven of "American Idol," she's co-starring in a movie for the Hallmark Channel. White plays the owner of a record company, who's been estranged from her brother for 10 years. They have to return home after their mother suffers a heart attack. White will perform two original songs. "Banner 4th of July" airs June 29 on the Hallmark Channel.
"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" - BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Benedict Cumberbatch hopes he confuses you in "Star Trek Into Darkness." Cumberbatch likes how audiences come to understand why he's on a rampage of revenge. He says that leads to "a confusing audience empathy," which he says is "a novelty" in an action movie. He says it's "a nice, rich, deep vein of confusion."
